• Juveniles: Can start in a 4x2ft indoor enclosure, but they grow rapidly (sometimes gaining 10+ lbs a year).
• The Adult Reality: By age 5–10, they need a large, secure outdoor enclosure (hundreds of square feet) with a heated, climate-controlled "tortoise shed" for the winter months. They are masters of destruction—wooden fences will not hold them.
• Substrate: Deep, moisture-retaining soil/sand mix that allows for deep burrowing. They need to be able to thermoregulate by digging.
• Basking Spot: 95–100°F (They are intense heat-seekers).
• Ambient: 75–85°F.
• UVB: Because they are so large and spend so much time in the sun, a high-intensity linear T5 HO 12% UVB tube is non-negotiable for indoor setups. Without it, they will develop crippling bone disease.
• The Diet: Strictly 95% grasses and weeds (Timothy hay, orchard grass, bermuda grass, dandelion greens, prickly pear cactus).
• The Rule: If you can buy it at a grocery store (like lettuce or fruit), do not feed it to a Sulcata. Sugar and protein are the enemies; they cause rapid, unhealthy growth and organ failure.
• Hydration: Daily access to shallow, clean water. They are prone to bladder stones if not properly hydrated.
• Extreme Pyramiding: If the shell is severely peaked like a mountain range, the tortoise has been chronically overfed and under-hydrated.
• Bladder Stones: A medical emergency. If the tortoise is straining to urinate, seek an exotic vet immediately.
• Respiratory Distress: Often caused by damp, cold conditions in a poorly ventilated shelter.
• Landscaping for Forage: Instead of buying food, dedicate part of your enclosure to planting tortoise-safe weeds and grasses (Dandelion, Clover, Orchard Grass). It creates a self-sustaining food source.
The Sulcata tortoise is not a pet for a backyard; it is a project for a lifestyle. You are adopting an animal that will live for 70+ years, weigh over 100 pounds, and require a climate-controlled building for the Michigan winter. If you do not have the land, the security, and the budget to heat a large shed, please do not adopt this species.
