• Space Requirements: Rats are intelligent athletes. We require a minimum of 2 cubic feet of volume per rat. Floor space is good, but vertical height for climbing is essential.
• The "No-Go" List: Avoid glass tanks or aquariums. They lack the ventilation required to prevent the ammonia build-up that causes chronic respiratory disease.
• Enrichment: Use hammocks, ropes, foraging toys, and multi-level platforms. If the cage isn't "cluttered" with safe items to explore, it is too empty.
• The Base: A high-quality lab block (specifically formulated for rodents) should make up 80% of their diet to ensure complete nutrition.
• Fresh Rotation: Supplement with a daily rotation of fresh, bird-safe vegetables and occasional high-protein treats (cooked chicken, hard-boiled egg).
• Hydration: Always provide access to clean water via a drip-free bottle or a heavy, shallow ceramic bowl.
• Pack Animals: Rats are highly social. Keeping a lone rat is not an option for Recovery Pets adoptions. They must be kept in same-sex pairs or groups to prevent severe anxiety and behavioral depression.
• Bonding: They require daily interaction with their humans to remain socialized and confident.
• The "Sneeze" Rule: If a rat is consistently sneezing or has a "clicking" sound when breathing, this is a sign of respiratory distress. Seek an exotic-specialist vet immediately.
• Grooming: Rats are fastidious groomers. If a rat looks unkempt, greasy, or has porphyrin (red discharge) around the eyes/nose, they are likely feeling unwell.
• Annual Exams: We recommend an annual checkup with a vet experienced in small mammals.
• Upcycling: Many rat enrichment items can be made from "trash." Use empty cardboard boxes, toilet paper rolls, and clean fleece scraps from old clothing to create DIY foraging toys.
• Check out our Starter Packs & Fundraisers page to see how we turn recycled materials into premium enrichment.
Adopting rats is a 2-3 year commitment. They are high-intelligence animals that thrive on your time and attention. If you cannot provide 1+ hours of interaction daily, please reconsider.
