• Space: While juveniles can start in 20-gallon tanks, adults thrive in a minimum 4x2x2ft enclosure. They are active explorers that utilize their vertical space if provided with sturdy, naturalistic climbing branches.
• Security: Like most colubrids, they are escape artists. An enclosure with a locking, heavy-duty lid is mandatory.
• Substrate: They enjoy burrowing. Use 3–4 inches of aspen or a cypress-based substrate that holds its shape. Avoid cedar, which is toxic.
• Gradient: Cool side: 72–76°F. Warm side (basking spot): 85–88°F.
• Control: Use a thermostat with all heat sources to prevent thermal burns. Overhead heat (Deep Heat Projectors or Ceramic Heat Emitters) is preferred to create a naturalistic basking zone.
• Humidity: Maintain 40–50%. Because they are a widespread species, they generally tolerate standard home humidity well, but always monitor for clean sheds.
• Feeding: Kingsnakes are notorious for their voracious appetites and will often eat even when they aren't hungry. Stick to a strict schedule to prevent obesity.
• Schedule: Juveniles: every 7–10 days. Adults: every 14–21 days.
• Caution: They are famous for "ophiophagy" (eating other snakes). Never house two kingsnakes together, even for a short time—they will eventually attempt to eat one another.
• Respiratory Infection: Clicking or wheezing sounds. This is often caused by humidity that is consistently too high.
• Regurgitation: As with other snakes, a regurgitation is a major medical event. Do not feed for two weeks, keep them quiet, and consult an exotic vet.
• Inappetence: If they suddenly stop eating, check temperatures first. If the temps are correct, it may be a sign of internal parasites.
• Upcycling: Use heavy, repurposed ceramic mugs or food-safe plastic containers as high-quality hides. Because Kingsnakes are strong, ensure all decor is heavy enough that it cannot be knocked over.

Kingsnakes are a 15–20 year commitment. They are active, powerful, and intelligent animals. Their voracious appetite means they require very disciplined feeding schedules, and their instinct to consume other snakes means they must always live alone. If you cannot provide a secure, solitary environment, this is not the right species for you.
