Ball Python Care: The "Recovery Pets" Standard
1. The Enclosure: Humidity & Security
• Space Requirements: While often kept in smaller tubs, we prioritize 4x2x2ft enclosures for adults to allow for natural movement. Juveniles require at least a 40-gallon equivalent.
• Humidity: Non-negotiable. Maintain 60–80% humidity to prevent respiratory infections and ensure perfect sheds.
• Security: Provide a minimum of two tight-fitting hides (one on the warm end, one on the cool end). If they feel exposed, they will not feed properly.
2. Thermal Gradient: Essential for Digestion
• The Gradient: Cool side: 75–80°F. Warm basking spot: 88–92°F.
• Control: Use a reliable thermostat with all heat sources to prevent thermal burns. Overhead heating (Deep Heat Projectors or Ceramic Heat Emitters) is preferred over under-tank mats for better ambient heat.
3. Nutrition: Consistency is Key
• Feeding: Offer humanely euthanized frozen-thawed rodents. Never feed live prey—it is unnecessary and risks severe injury to your snake.
• Schedule: Establish a routine. Juveniles: every 7–10 days. Adults: every 14–21 days.
4. Health: The "Recovery" Red Flags
• Respiratory Infection: Wheezing, clicking sounds, or open-mouth breathing. This usually stems from environmental neglect (low humidity).
• Stuck Shed: A sign of improper humidity. Never manually pull a shed; fix the environment and let it resolve.
• Scale Rot: Caused by sitting on damp/dirty substrate. Keep the top layer of substrate dry.
5. Recovery Approved Sustainability Tip
• Upcycling: Don't buy expensive plastic hides. Clean, repurposed plastic containers or food-safe ceramic pots make excellent, eco-friendly, and easy-to-clean hides.

The Reality Check
Ball Pythons are a 20–30 year commitment. They are secretive, stress-prone animals that require precise environmental control. If you cannot maintain consistent humidity and temperature daily, they are not the right pet for your lifestyle.
